Determined to save lives and end breast cancer forever, the Coastal Georgia Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the CureĀ® has awarded nine grants totaling $225,000 to programs providing breast cancer services in the coastal Georgia area
2010 Grantees
1. St. Joseph’s/ Candler Health System
Providing Coordinated and Comprehensive Breast Health Services for Underserved Women
Grant Award: $39,877
The Providing Coordinated and Comprehensive Breast Health Services for Underserved Women Project will provide continued and expanded comprehensive breast health services for underserved/uninsured women in Bryan, Chatham, Effingham, Glynn, Liberty, Long and McIntosh counties including screening/diagnostic mammograms, breast sonography and MRI, image guided biopsies and case management/navigation services throughout the continuum of care
2. Memorial Health University Medical Center
Comprehensive Breast Health Program at MHUMC
Grant Award: $26,421
The Comprehensive Breast Health Program at MUMC is a three-part comprehensive breast care initiative that includes the provision of the services of a nurse navigator, the implementation of a Breast Care Hotline, and the coordination of outreach efforts focused towards Hispanic/Latino and African American populations in Bryan, Camden, Chatham, Effingham, Glynn, Liberty, Long and McIntosh counties.
3. National Black Leadership Initiative On Cancer-Savannah Coalition
Knowledge is Power: Breast Health Education Series & Navigation Project
Grant Award: $40,450
The Knowledge is Power Breast Health Education Series and Navigation Project expands the ongoing work of the National Black Leadership Initiative on Cancer-Savannah Coalition (NBLIC) to educate African American and underserved women in coastal Georgia about breast health. The project helps women in need to understand all aspects of breast health including breast cancer risk factors, prevention, early detection, screening, diagnosis, treatment and follow up care and also provides educational programming for survivors and patient navigation services.
4. Memorial Health University Medical Center
Mammograms for Komen 2010
Grant Award: $28,560
In a collaborative effort with the Georgia Division of Public Health Coastal Health District’s BCCP program, the Mammograms for Komen 2010 project will provide breast cancer education, mammograms, diagnostic and follow-up services to medically indigent women throughout the coastal region as well as diagnostic work-ups if indicated, follow-up and outreach education on the importance of breast screening.
5. Savannah Black Nurses Association
B-WISE - Black Women Inspired To Do Self Breast Exam
Grant Award: $13,359
Project B-Wise will educate women living in Chatham County public housing on breast cancer awareness, prevention, screening and breast self examination. Nurses and other clinicians will present culturally sensitive breast cancer early detection and follow up information through seminars and presentations given in public housing neighborhoods.
6. Coastal Health District
Navigating Through Troubled Waters
Grant Award: $15,000
The Navigating Through Troubled Waters Program will work with the state and federally funded Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (BCCCP) to enhance breast cancer education, screening and diagnostic services provided to low-income uninsured women by offering the services of a client navigator to patients with abnormal clinical breast exam and/or mammogram results. The navigator will address barriers to diagnosis and treatment with the goal of reducing the number of women with delayed or no treatment.
7. A Working Woman In Need (AWWIN)
AWWIN Thinking Pink
Grant Award: $22,900
AWWIN Thinking Pink will work to educate women in underserved communities through workshops held in their neighborhoods. These monthly workshops will focus on addressing fears, answering questions, and providing accurate information regarding the detection and treatment of breast cancer.
8. Liberty County Health Department
BRAVE Project
Grant Award: $35,440
Liberty County Health Department’s BRAVE (Be Readily Available and Very Empathetic) Project will target uninsured and underserved women in rural Liberty County in an effort to encourage them to seek appropriate breast care including monthly self-breast exams, annual mammograms, and necessary follow-up and diagnostics.
9. Dixville Inter-City for Growth
Coastal Bells Breast Health Program
Grant Award: $3,000
The Coastal Bells Breast Health Program is targeted toward the uninsured and underserved population of Glynn, Camden and McIntosh counties and works to increase the awareness of breast cancer and the importance of early detection and screening through a collaborative network including the Area Agency on Aging, Grandparent Connection, Glynn County Health Department, hospitals, community centers, churches and civic groups.
