History

Susan G. Komen is the world’s largest breast cancer organization, funding more breast cancer research than any other nonprofit while providing real-time help to those facing the disease. Since its founding in 1982, Komen has funded more than $889 million in research and provided more than $1.6 billion in funding to screening, education, treatment and psychosocial support programs serving millions of people in more than 30 countries worldwide. Komen was founded by Nancy G. Brinker, who promised her sister, Susan G. Komen, that she would end the disease that claimed Suzy’s life.

Komen Coastal Georgia’s mission is to save lives by meeting the most critical needs in our communities and investing in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer. Started in 2006, our affiliate has invested over $2.2 million in local grants and research, with 75% of proceeds going to local breast health services, and 25% going to national research programs to find a cure for breast cancer. We held our first Race in 2009, and hired our first staff member in 2010. We now have four full time staff members serving our nine county community, which consists of Bryan, Bulloch, Camden, Chatham, Effingham, Glynn, Liberty, Long, and McIntosh counties. Our staff, board, and volunteers are all committed to helping end breast cancer forever, so please join in our fight and volunteer today.
